Good snap shot for Carlos Aguilar, one of my students.  Finished 4th on the Challenge tour event in France.  He was leading for two rounds until the final day.  But well done to him.

Seville Spanish Open

Practice days Tuesday 1st and Wednesday 2nd May 2012

Indications had been that the weather would not be the best and rain would interrupt play and they were right!
The Spanish open, the 100th anniversary saw the event back at the fantastic golf course of Real Club de Golf de Seville and the course was set up in superb conditions. The rough was very long and thick; every player was concerned and knew that the half way cut was going to be higher than normal.

The greens were in excellent condition and the stimp reading was near to 11 but true and a solid read and putt would bring great results. I turned up in the morning of Tuesday with my bag of MLA putters and said the hello to the other coaches and club and putter representatives.

Well, the weather was really good, cloudy but warm with the occasional breakthrough of sun, so perfect conditions. My first impressions at the event of what the players were doing was – ‘so many players are using belly or the long putter’.  What is happening out here?  Why are so many players being converted?  I can understand someone using a belly putter for practice and gaining feel but I am one who believes that something should be done to get the rules regimented to confirm where the longer putter fits in golf!

The Tuesday before an event is normally the time when the player checks out his putter and does a little experimentation.  Wednesday is the day to be involved in the pro-am or to prepare for the start of the event and touch up those areas of need. The green over the next two days was streaming with players, all searching for the secret of the perfect putting stroke.  Numerous players came and inspected the MLA putter range and great remarks were made about how they sat and the great weighting they have. Regarding the alignment?  It is well received and the reason for the difference in ideals is understood but some players are stuck in their ways.  However, it won’t be long before a player takes up the MLA putter and does a great job with it! My recommendations are for a selection or belly and longer MLA putters to be made available at events; this will give a great response and maybe the breakthrough that is needed!

The next event is in La Quinta Golf & Country Club for the Spanish senior Masters – 1st to the 3rd June.
